The coin was first released in 1986 by the United States Mint. Not only is this coin highly collectible, but it is also one of the most popular coins in the world. The American Gold Eagle uses the weight of the bullion coin to differentiate between other similar coins made after 1933. This specific coin is a 1/2 ounce coin. Other coins exist at 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1 oz denominations. However, there is a difference between bullion coins and proof coins, this specific coin is a bullion coin.
Design
With flowing hair, Lady liberty is on the obverse side of the American Eagle Gold Coin. Likewise, she is holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design is based on the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Coin which Theodore Roosevelt commissioned with the purpose of creating United States minted coins that resemble ancient Greek and Roman coins. Between 1986 and 2021, the reverse design featured a male eagle. The eagle is carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her eaglet. Though, as of 2021, this same side of the coin now depicts a close-up side profile of an eagle.
